Accident: At Laphroaig , 5 miles from the airport at Port Ellen, Isle of Islay, 12-Jun-1986.

While on a scheduled passenger flight from Glasgow Airport a recently Twin Otter converted pilot was handling with a supervisory captain overseeing. The handling pilot descended towards the south of the Island rather than on the ATC directed track which took it below radar coverage. The weather was reported as visibility 2,000 metres in drizzle. Rather than the requested overflight of the airfield at 3,600,feet it appears that the aircraft tracked along the south coast at some 1,400 feet in what was now heavy drizzle and changed barometric pressure. The pilot reported that he was over the airfield but was not and was at low level at Laphroaig and very shortly afterwards crashed into rising ground that was obscured by hill fog at approx 360ft amsl. One crew and one passenger killed and one crew and ten passengers seriously injured. The aircraft was written off. The cause was determined as "The commander's decision to allow the handling pilot to carry out a visual approach in totally unsuitable meteorological conditions. An error in visual navigation was a contributory factor."

Note: The aircraft wreckage was acquired by Newcal Aviation and was initially transported to Teterboro, NJ - it was later transported to Calgary, AB., after being acquired by Viking Air.
