• XW-PHP Leased to Continental Air Services Inc., Vientiane, Laos, 06-Aug-1971. Canx as at 10-Jan-1974

Note: Continental Air Services, Inc., (CASI) was formed in April 1965 as a wholly-owned subsidiary of Continental Air Lines Inc. to operate aircraft and ground facilities in support of oil exploration, construction and engineering projects, USAID and other US Government Agencies, e.g. the CIA. In August 1965 the company took over much of the aviation division of Bird and Sons in Laos and Vietnam, with headquarters in Vientiane.

Aircraft were interchanged between the fleets of Air America and CASI, perhaps without any change of ownership, thus adding a further complication to the compiling of fleet lists. Many aircraft owned by Bird & Sons were registered in Laos (on the XW- register) and some of the survivors were later transferred to the US register under CASI ownership many years after the take-over. With the fall of Laos, Vietnam and Cambodia, operations were terminated and the surviving aircraft were sold.

• XW-PHP operated in zone BRAVO on USAID supply drop missions. Zone ALPHA comprised locations like Sam Thong (LS-20) or Pa Doung (LS-5), so was south of the Plain of Jars; zone BRAVO comprised locations like Ban Na (LS-15) or Xieng Dat (LS-117), so was west of the Plain of Jars

Note: An extract from the utdallas.edu/library  On the morning of December 18th, three CAS Otters with Captains Taylor, Cloud and Clark were dispatched to Alternate per the usual schedule. On arrival at Alternate, they were briefed that the NVA had launched a full scale attack on the fire bases situated on the PDJ. At that time, the full extent of the attack and damage inflicted on the bases was not known. The aircraft were dispatched with emergency ammo and rations for the bases under attack. I was not flying that day, so do not have the complete details of what transpired through the course of the day. I do know that the Otters came under intense ground fire and XW-PHP with Dan Cloud took a hit through the forward fuel cell. To quote Cloud, ‘as I went into drop at Fox-Bravo, every tree and bush opened up on me.’ Cloud’s aircraft was the only one hit that day, but all aircraft were being fired on continuously.

Accident: Dunk Island,QLD, Australia. 18-Nov-1988. The aircraft was to operate a passenger carrying flight to Townsville. Witness reports indicate that the aircraft was aligned on runway 14 in preparation for takeoff. Power was applied and the takeoff run commenced. At the beginning of the takeoff run the aircraft veered to the right and the right mainwheel ran off the sealed runway onto the grass. The aircraft then veered sharply to the left, crossed the runway and ran onto the grass beyond the gable markers. The aircraft then collided with a concrete culvert, crossed a roadway, and came to rest in trees 315 metres from the runway threshold. Comprehensive examination of the aircraft did not reveal any defect or failure that may have contributed to the development of the accident. The weather at the time of the accident was not contributory. The flight crew declined to make themselves available to the investigators for interview. The crew were issued with summonses but did not answer the summons, apparently under direction from their industrial association. This action by the crew hampered the investigation and resulted in no causal factors being determined
